I won't go further into comparisons like that because to be fair I'm comparing Motion, a 50 something euro piece of software with a lifetime licence to Autodesk Maya, a €200 euro a month piece of software. What is nice with its spline/bezier mode, is that it detects what the keyframe tangents should be, even after moving on to a different key (the bezier curve tangents tend to make a lot of sense and I don't have to correct flattened tangents as often). Maya has a highly advanced tween/bezier interpolation mode that is switched on during the later stages of animation. Going straight to bezier mode in that industry isn't good practice because of the time it takes too animate a character and the need to put something in front of a director before all of the motion is in place. That's how pretty much everyone works in film and television studios for CG character shows, often with games too.

We like the computer to help but we don't want to give it too much control over our motion. That's the initial stage of character animation and is necessary to get good posing before letting the computer interpolate. In the videos of Tween Machine you would have seen, you probably saw animators working on what is known as blocking (in Motion - constant mode). In character animation I am often dealing with 200+ controls with 9+ channels each, so that's why Tween Machine became a necessity there. That's why a tool like Tween Machine is so useful to me, I can change 9 or more animation channels at once with a simple slider instead of changing each channel individually. Motion hasn't got a hindsight auto-tangent detection built into it so often, I have to change a lot of the tangents it creates by hand.

For that, a tool like tween machine is great.įor every controller or object, there can be 3 translation channels, 3 rotation channels, opacity and 3 scale channels before I get to individual effects. I want to be able to animate things by hand with precision more easily. I don't want to set behaviours or create machine generated ease ins/outs etc.
